The rapid expansion of AI and data centers has supercharged global technological innovation and economic growth, enabling real-time processing of massive datasets. However, this digital boom drives a critical environmental challenge, significantly escalating global energy demands and straining local power grids and water resources.

What is AI?

If you have used Siri or Google Assistant, or asked a question to Alexa, then you are using a form of artificial intelligence. These all use voice recognition and machine learning to answer questions and respond to requests. If you have ever contacted customer service online to get help, then more than likely, your conversation began with a chatbot. Chatbots were not always considered AI but they have recently become more sophisticated and are increasingly using AI learning.

There are several beneficial uses for AI, and even more when you pair AI with robotics. Many of the products we use today incorporate some form of AI. But AI is expensive, it can be weaponised, and it can result in the loss of jobs for humans, among other things. While none of us can predict the future, AI is here.

Ai relies on data centres

Artificial intelligence is entirely dependent on the massive computational infrastructure provided by data centres, which serve as the physical "brains" behind virtual algorithms. Training complex AI models requires processing petabytes of data through thousands of specialized, high-performance chips, a task far beyond the capacity of standard computing networks.

Data centres provide the centralised, high-density power environments, ultra-fast connectivity, and specialised cooling systems necessary to keep these processors running without melting down. Without this heavy-duty infrastructure — AI processes simply could not exist.

​The rapid expansion of data centres into residential and suburban areas has turned water access into a major community flashpoint. Large "hyperscale" facilities can consume up to 5 million gallons of water a day for cooling—drawing from the exact same municipal pipes and underground aquifers that supply the surrounding neighborhoods. Because these cooling towers lose massive amounts of water to evaporation, this relentless, 24/7 demand acts like a giant straw in the local water table, threatening to trigger water restrictions, drive up utility bills, and deplete critical resources for residents living just down the street.

Energy grids under strain

The rapid clustering of data centres near residential areas is putting unprecedented strain on local electricity grids, often competing directly with households for power. These facilities operate continuously and consume massive amounts of electricity to run and cool high-density servers, effectively swallowing up grid capacity that would otherwise support community growth. For local residents, this surging, non-stop demand can lead to increased risk of power outages, localised spikes in utility electricity rates, and delayed transitions to clean energy as utilities are forced to keep fossil-fuel plants online just to keep up with the data centres' relentless power needs.
